Father Francis Filice, 92

July 24, 2015

Father Francis Filice died July 17 at Nazareth House in San Rafael. He was 92 years old and a priest for 36 years.

Father Filice was a graduate of San Francisco’s St. Anne School and, now, Sacred Heart Cathedral Preparatory and later earned a doctorate in biology from UC Berkeley; studies that put him on the way to an almost 30-year teaching career at the University of San Francisco.

A widower, having lost his wife, Barbara in 1976, Father Filice went on to studies at St. Patrick’s Seminary in Menlo Park and was ordained a priest May 19, 1979, by Archbishop John R. Quinn.

He subsequently served as a parochial vicar at parishes including Our Lady of Perpetual Help, Daly City; St. Raphael’s, San Rafael and St. Anne of the Sunset, San Francisco.

Beginning in 1996, Father Filice began service as chaplain to San Francisco’s Sisters of Perpetual Adoration as well as the Veterans Administration Hospital in San Francisco and with men and women inmates of the San Francisco and San Mateo County jails. Father Filice was a founder of the pro-life group United for Life.

Father Filice moved to Nazareth House in 2011 and was known to be a regular confessor there and at nearby St. Isabella Parish.

Survivors include Father Filice’s sister Gloria Pizzinelli; a daughter Marian and her husband Deacon David Previtali; and his grandson Father Joseph Previtali, a parochial vicar at Our Lady of the Pillar Parish, Half Moon Bay.

A funeral Mass was celebrated July 22 at St. Mary’s Cathedral. Remembrances may be made to the Priests’ Retirement Fund, One Peter Yorke Way, San Francisco, 94109.
