Father William Ahlbach – 51 years a priest

Father William Ahlbach died June 14 at St. Matthew Parish, San Mateo, where he had served since 1982. Father Ahlbach retired in 2012. He was 76 and had celebrated his 51st year as a priest June 9. A funeral Mass was celebrated June 20 at St. Matthew.

Sister Veronique Hennegan, BVM

Sister Veronique Hennegan , a Sister of Charity of the Blessed Virgin Mary for 74 years, died May 31 at Marian Hall in Dubuque, Iowa, where a funeral Mass was celebrated with burial in the sisters’ Mount Carmel cemetery. She was 92 years of age.

William G. Hartmann – church financial adviser

William G. Hartmann of San Mateo died May 27. Born in Vallejo in 1944 to William P. Hartmann of Lake County and Inez Novelli of Santa Rosa, he soon moved with his parents to San Francisco, then to San Mateo in 1956.

Father William Quinn, 83 – retired Holy Name pastor

Father William Quinn, retired pastor of Holy Name of Jesus Parish, San Francisco, died April 24 at Nazareth House in San Rafael. Ordained on June 11, 1955, by Archbishop John J. Mitty, Father Quinn was a priest for 57 years. He was 83 years old.

Sister Mary Geraldine McDonnell, RSM – former USF nursing school dean

Mercy Sister Mary Geraldine McDonnell died March 28 at the age of 93. A funeral Mass was held April 12 at the Mercy Chapel in Burlingame, with burial at Holy Cross Cemetery.

Salesian Father John J. Malloy, 91, died March 27 at St. Mary’s Hospital, San Francisco. Father Malloy was a religious for 72 years and a priest for almost 62 years. He is retired pastor of Sts. Peter and Paul Parish in North Beach where he served from 2001-07.

Father Andrew Maginnis, SJ – Jesuit for 73 years

Jesuit Father Andrew Francis Maginnis, 89, died March 17 in the Jesuits’ Regis Infirmary, Sacred Heart Jesuit Center, Los Gatos. He had been a Jesuit for 73 years, an ordained priest for 50.

Mother Helen Costello, RSCJ – ‘Never talks theology but lives it’

Sacred Heart Sister Helen Costello, known by many as Mother Costello, died Jan. 24 at Oakwood, the Society of the Sacred Heart’s elder care center in Atherton. She was 94 and a religious for 74 years. She was a 1935 graduate of Sacred Heart Academy, Menlo Park.
